Mexico City has given birth to many talented individuals who have left a mark on the world. Among them is the renowned architect and graphic designer, Andrés Saavedra. His innovative approach to design and his passion for sustainability have earned him recognition both in Mexico and abroad. Today, we delve into the life and achievements of this visionary artist.

Born and raised in Mexico City, Saavedra’s path led him to the beautiful coastal town of Ixtapa in the state of Guerrero. It was there that he established his architecture firm and discovered his love for surfing on the iconic wave of Loma Bonita. As he built his business, fate intervened when he crossed paths with Tara Medina, a native of Canada. According to Medina, «I was learning to surf, and he introduced me to the water. The rest is history. I was at a crossroads in my life, and Andrés told me, ‘You should move to Mexico.’ So, I moved to Ixtapa in 2010.»

It turned out that the couple was not only a perfect match personally but also professionally. They collaborated on Saavedra’s development projects and together founded LOOT, a surf-inspired lifestyle brand that builds community in Zihuatanejo and Mexico City through cultural events, contemporary retail spaces, cafes, art galleries, and more. The next evolution of their work came in the form of MUSA: the Modern Utopian Society of Adventurers, a community and hotel located on a wild peninsula that Saavedra had dreamt of acquiring for years. «In fact, he took me there on our second date,» says Medina. In this conversation, they share the story from the beginning.

MUSA, acronym for Modern Utopian Society of Adventurers, is the brainchild of Mexican designer Andrés Saavedra and Canadian entrepreneur Tara Medina. This ambitious project spans over a kilometer and a half of beachfront and more than 70 hectares of palm trees, embodying their vision of a community model based on conscious design and sustainability, where work and well-being coexist in synergy.

At the heart of the project lies a small boutique hotel: Hotelito. Situated near the coastal city of Zihuatanejo, Hotelito is the newest addition to MUSA. The resort upholds MUSA’s values in terms of ecological and ethical importance, and shows absolute respect towards local communities. As part of the Design Hotels collection, Hotelito promises a vacation immersed in wild nature and equipped with all the advantages of a charming retreat. Thirteen minimalist-designed rooms offer guests the luxury of saltwater pools and private swimming pools, all with the magic of the ocean just steps away.

Andrés Saavedra’s architectural skills and dedication to sustainability have not only shaped his personal success but also contributed to the transformation of entire communities. Through projects like LOOT and MUSA, he has created spaces that inspire creativity, foster connections, and celebrate the beauty of nature.

As the world continues to embrace a sustainable lifestyle, architects like Saavedra are at the forefront of designing innovative and environmentally respectful spaces that push the boundaries of conventional architecture. With each new project, he leaves an indelible mark on the landscape, reminding us of the importance of harmonizing our designs with the natural world.

Andrés Saavedra’s journey as an architect and graphic designer is a testament to the power of passion, vision, and dedication. As he continues to shape the world around him, we eagerly anticipate his future creations, knowing they will inspire and captivate us with their unique blend of craftsmanship and sustainability.
